What is social work?

Before explaining what social work is, I think I have to make clear, first time, what social workers are and what they do.

In short, social workers are social scene specialists who work based on a specific scientific approach for people empowerment and human rights promoting trying to solve social problems and to improve social life.

Social Work Definition

According to International Federation of Social Work (IFSW) the global definition of social work, it is a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people. Principles of social justice, human rights, collective responsibility and respect for diversities are central to social work. Underpinned by theories of social work, social sciences, humanities and indigenous knowledge, social work engages people and structures to address life challenges and enhance wellbeing. The above definition may be amplified at national and/or regional levels.

From a Historical point of view the first social settlement was established in London, in 188 (Toynbee Hall). Samuel Augustus Barnett rented a building in a suburban area to create a community center. Social programs were meant to contribute to the development of life skills and family education of those from poor social classes and to the formation of community spirit
